Hey Guys and Gals!
I just returned from a quick trip to Mexico. I’ve been trying to convince my wife to take a trip to Mexico for about seven years now, so when she picked Isla Holbox (pronounced eesla holbosch), a small island on the northern Yucatan peninsula, I was all over it.

I packed an 8, 9 & 10 weight rod and without a plan, hoped for the best. We flew into Cancun then hitched a two hour van ride to the north coast. There are no autos on this island, so after a boat ride from the mainland, we hitched another ride to our lodge…this time via golf cart.

The population on Isla Holbox is small, so within several hours I was talking with the top tarpon guide in the area while sipping an ice cold Pacifico. His name is Alejandro & I snagged him for the following two days.

Strong winds had brought in a “red tide” type algae which had pushed the large 100 lb. plus tarpon out of the area. It didn’t matter as I had one of the best fishing trips of my life.
We chased baby tarpon in the back lagoons for the next two days. The water was less than knee deep in most spots and we sight fished for these tarpon just like bonefish.

Spotting dorsal fins & tails and watching them come across the flats in large schools was heart stopping. I hooked 16 fish & landed 8 not a bad percentage when dealing with these steel jawed, acrobatic fish.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the photos & I hope to see y’all on the water soon. Tight Lines! Kelly
